Microneedling with PRP: The Ultimate Anti-Aging Facial

No matter how well you care for your skin, eventually, age will take its toll. Microneedling and PRP can both help — but they work even better when combined. Here’s how they can help you enjoy skin that looks and feels more youthful.

Aging skin might be inescapable, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing we can do about it. Today, there are lots of treatments that can help skin look and feel smoother and firmer, including the popular combination of microneedling and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) — aka, the “vampire” facial.

Jacob Simhaee, MD, and his team offer microneedling with PRP to help women restore firmer, smoother, more youthful skin without surgery or its attendant risks. Here’s how this unique combination can help you look and feel your youthful best.

Quick facts about PRP and microneedling

Microneedling and PRP treatment both focus on stimulating healing responses inside your skin, replenishing collagen and elastin fibers that diminish with age while stimulating natural tissue repair.

PRP

Like the name implies, platelet-rich plasma contains two primary components: plasma (the liquid part of your blood) and tiny protein fragments called platelets. Platelets contain proteins called growth factors that play important roles in tissue healing and clotting.

PRP treatment begins with the extraction of a small sample of your blood. The sample is processed to separate the platelets and plasma from the rest of your blood, concentrating the number of platelets to enhance their effects. Then, the processed sample is either injected or, in the case of a vampire facial, applied to the surface of your skin.

Microneedling

Microneedling uses a special tool studded with extremely thin, tiny needles to stimulate production of collagen and elastin, proteins that give skin its firmness and resilience.

Collagen and elastin are produced in abundance when we’re young, helping skin look and feel smooth and firm. But as we age, production dramatically slows down, resulting in sagging skin, lines, and wrinkles, along with changes in skin texture.

Microneedling treatment creates areas of “controlled damage” in your skin. As the device moves over your skin, the needles penetrate the upper layers, promoting natural healing responses, including the development of collagen and elastin.

PRP and microneedling: Better together

While you can definitely achieve beautiful results with either of these treatments used individually, they also complement each other, meaning that for many people, a combination treatment is the way to go.

When used together, microneedling creates tiny channels that allow PRP to penetrate better, reaching deeper layers of skin where collagen and elastin remodeling occur. Optimized tissue remodeling means your skin looks healthier and feels smoother, firmer, and more youthful, with results that last longer, too.

Plus, like each separate technique, the combination of PRP and microneedling can be customized from start to finish, providing you with a tailored treatment plan that’s squarely focused on your skin’s needs and your aesthetic concerns.

In fact, a vampire facial can be a great choice for lots of age-related concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation and age spots
  • Lax skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Rough skin texture
  • Large pores
  • Scars, including acne scars

Best of all, you can have multiple issues treated in one session and sessions can be repeated depending on your goals.

While a single combination treatment can yield beautiful results, most people benefit from a series of 2-4 treatments spaced out over a few weeks to give your skin a chance to heal and improve. And because PRP is made from your own blood, you don’t have to worry about allergic reactions or sensitivity issues, either.
